about

Sometime in 1984 in NYC I became the proud owner of
a Yamaha 4 track cassette recorder. Immediately my
songwriting manoeuvres changed forever. I now had
the means to experiment with arrangements and instrumentation without having to persuade other
musicians to indulge me. I could play with myself!

After thousands of hours of fun with that machine,
in the 90s I acquired an 8 track Tascam reel to reel recorder with a built in mixer. This kept me happy for several years. Then in 2003 I went digital and bought
a hard disc recorder, and 3 years later got a new Mac and a basic Pro Tools rig.

Through all of these years I have made do with an absolute minimum of peripherals. Pre-amps, effects, plug-ins, and so on have been scarce or non existent. I have nonetheless made hundreds of recordings, and some of them are not that bad!

lo fi is a collection of 15 of the better ones. I think they are worth a listen. I hope you do too!

I will shortly put more info on my soon-to-be-launched website
www.georgebreakfast.com

In the spirit of lo fi this album is very cheap!

Track Name: aint it high time
aint it high time

I had to laugh
she said, ‘what’s funny?’
I told that girl
I had no money
had no prospects
of getting any
aint it high time
aint it high time
aint it high time
we got lucky

times are tough
they’re getting tougher
this bumpy ride
is getting rougher
how much longer
must we suffer
aint it high time….

you can get used
to saying nothing
what’s the use
in all that fussing
no one’s talking
they’re just cussing
aint it high time…..

I’ve got a friend
he won’t give in
keeps on going
through thick and thin
waits each day
for his ship to come in
aint it high time…..

Track Name: walk a mile with me my friend
walk a mile with me my friend

aint it a struggle
aint it a breeze
aint it a mystery
aint it all of these
you may be with trusted friends
you may be among thieves
any time you feel all alone
you’re in good company

we’re all travelling the same road
to the same end
we’re all looking for the same something
round the same next bend
our way is lit by the same light
and if we must we fight the same fight
we’re all travelling the same road
walk a mile with me my friend

maybe you’re wealthy, more likely poor
a man from Timbuktu, or the girl next door
all round the world we look to our leaders
be they prophets, presidents or kings
and each last pair of ears prick up
when the last bell rings

we’re all…………

Track Name: its a dog's life
it’s a dog’s life

I like to walk like a dog
I like to wag my tail
I chase anything
imaginary or real
it aint so tough
just being a dog’s enough

I like to talk like a dog
I like to howl at the moon
I come when I’m called
if I’ve got nothing better to do
it aint so tough
just being a dog’s enough

‘cos it’s a dog’s life
a dog’s life
a dog’s life
a dog’s life
it aint so tough
just being a dog’s enough

I like to eat like a dog
sleep like a dog
bathe and dress
chase sheep like a dog
sit like a dog
run like a dog
bark and growl
have fun like a dog

‘cos it’s a dog’s life……

Track Name: hymn
hymn

I wish I knew how
to tell you right now
how I feel but the words just wont come
you stand before me
in all your glory
my only, my permanent one
friends come and they go
wives and lovers also
children speak in strange tongues
still with you I am glad
even when I’m sad
with you I’ll remain when I’m done

only with you
do dreams come true
only with you is there peace
since so long ago too
still I barely know you
you are my only relief
I’m thrown to the lions
cast overboard
hung from a tree till I’m dead
your patient regard
continues unmarred
as this doggerel pours out of my head

Track Name: never coming back
never coming back

you keep on calling me
at all times of the day and night
and tell me we cant be together
any more

as if our love is like
a light we can turn on and off
by flicking on a plastic switch
that’s on the wall

you not here, I’m not there
we’re disconnected, out of whack
and I’m afraid, and I’m afraid
you’re never coming back

and when we meet out on the street
or in a house that is not ours
and yet we’ll find again
we’re face to face

do you believe that we’ll
no longer want to reach out
tenderly and wrap each other
in a warm embrace

you not here, I’m not there
we’re disconnected, out of whack
and I’m afraid, I’m afraid
you’re never coming back………

Track Name: I'm going fishing
I'm going fishing

I’ve got me a box of worms
got me a hook and a line
got me a head full of troubles
to help me pass the time
and I’ve got something I can do
it don’t cost a dime
I’m going go down to where the water flows
and cast my line

I’m going fishing
got a line and a pole
I’m going fishing
hook me something
from a fishing hole

I hadnt seen her for a while
she said it hadnt been long enough
how can someone so sweet
wind up acting so tough
she turned her head away
as I reached across for a kiss
if that’s the way the world is today
all I’ve got to say is this

I’m going fishing…….

Track Name: like Adam & Eve
rolling hills to the horizon
open sky
not a sound but the
whispering trees

stepping out with my sweetheart
hand in hand
just we two like
Adam and Eve

spring lambs gambol in the meadow
under the sun
blossom scent perfumes
the breeze

our eyes pose unspoken questions
theres no reply
just we two like
Adam and Eve

lofty mountains
penetrate the sky
below the forest
a river rolls by

lightly we tread upon what grows there
no beaten path
just we two like
Adam and Eve

Track Name: sweet new orleans
you may know it well
or have never been
to New Orleans
but the Big Easy
sure has been to you
American music
that we all hear
can mostly find
its beginnings there
sweet New Orleans
how we cry for you

a hurricane
named Katrina came
to devastate you
thousands of your people
neighbourhoods and homes
all gone
Lake Ponchartrain
burst through the levee
as the weight of that water
our hearts are as heavy
sweet New Orleans
how we cry for you

the French Quarter stayed high and dry
your jazz and blues and funk and soul is well and alive
and all round the world your legacy thrives
hang tough New Orleans you can never die

Louis Armstrong
Professor Longhair
and Allen Toussaint
Fats Domino
Dr John, the funky Meters
to name a few
Tipitina’s
Bourbon St
the world’s still dancing
to your funky beat
sweet New Orleans
how we cry for you

Track Name: wont you be my valentine
wont you be my valentine

wont you be my valentine
wont you share a love divine
playing safe is never news
take a chance whats there to lose
I see the light in your eyes shine
wont you be my valentine

wont you be my valentine
put your little hand in mine
we’ll walk together in the park
sweet romancing in the dark
I’ll be yours if you’ll be mine
wont you be my valentine

we might find
we’re two of a kind
we compliment each other
we can take our time
but if we don’t try
we’ll never know one way or the other

lets put away these nagging fears
and dance together through the years
I’ll slip a ring on your finger
and in each loving moment linger
sweetly joined we’ll take our time
wont you be my valentine

Track Name: this little problem of mine
I’d like to ask you a question
it wont take a minute of your time
I’d sure value your opinion
about this little problem of mine

I like drinking all kinds of liquor
and I’m partial to all colours of wine
cider and beer keep me sincere
about this little problem of mine

see it don’t bother me
the things that I do
in fact it seems to suit me just fine
I aint found nothing better yet
to help me forget
about this little problem of mine

so wont you sit down for a moment
and hand me that bottle of wine
and listen to what I have to tell you
about this little problem of mine

none of us are getting any younger
and what I do don’t constitute a crime
and I don’t think I can hold out much longer
without this little problem of mine

see it don’t bother me
the things that I do
in fact it seems to suit me just fine
I aint found nothing better yet
to help me forget
about this little problem of mine
this tiny little problem of mine

Track Name: when they come for me
are they at the door
ask them please to wait
they got here too fast
this moments got to last

while I collect myself
shall I wear a hat
I’ll go quietly
when they come for me

I’ll be ready
as ready as I can
with no more bags to pack
only the man
I’ll smile and thank you
no more tears to cry
just hold me in your arms
kiss me goodbye……..kiss me goodbye

but they’re not here yet
there’s no time to waste
let the music play
dance my cares away

with a last hurrah
pull out all the stops
I’ll go quietly
when they come for me

I’ll be ready……………

Track Name: I've got me a little money
I’ve got me a little money
and I’m going to spend it all
I aint going to save a penny
I’m going to have me a ball
I’m not saving it up for a rainy day
because its going to rain anyway
I’ve got me a little money
and I’m going to spend it all

I’m going to buy you a present
anything you want
and then when we’ve done shopping
we’ll go to the restaurant
we’ll order up the finest dishes
a bottle of wine would be delicious
I’ve got me a little money
and I’m going to spend it all

now my financial advisers tell me
the next crash could be the last
so if you’ve got a little money
you might want to spend it fast
if you’re having trouble choosing a gift
if you’re suffering from an attack of thrift
if your spirits need a lift
go out and spend it all

yeah roll on down the highway
straight to the shopping mall
all those things you wanted honey
now you can have them all
powdered eggs, an electric knife
decaffeinated coffee, an inflatable wife…..
I’ve got me a little money
and I’m going to spend it all

I’ve got me a little money
and I’m going to spend it all
I aint going to save a penny
I’m going to have me a ball
I aint saving it up for a rainy day
because who needs wet money anyway
I’ve got me a little money
and I’m going to spend it all

Track Name: squeeze me
squeeze me

I’ve been so lonely
no one to hold
plenty of clothes
but I stay cold
plenty of friends
but we barely touch
I need your squeeze
your savage clutch

squeeze me…..

you wrap your arms
around my chest
my nose is pressed up
against your vest
I start to dream
I start to sweat
I start to scream
but I don’t have the breath

squeeze me….

and don’t let go
hold on tight
squeeze and squeeze
with all your might
I’m not scared
I’m not frightened
the more you squeeze
the more I like it
