about
Several years ago, developers based in Slough(!) submitted plans to build extremely ugly new buildings overlooking the Botanical Gardens in Cambridge. The plans required destroying our beloved Flying Pig pub, and moving the war memorial! At the time there was considerable local opposition, and we recorded this track then as part of that campaign. Unbelievably the campaign succeeded, the legal owners of the Pig at that time refused to sell, and local authorities did not grant permission for the scheme to go ahead.
We thought we had won, but we should have known better. These developers are the kind of merciless profiteers who never give up. They went away, regrouped, prettied up their plans in some kind of acceptable(sic) way and today are mostly doing what they planned in the first place. They have already moved the war memorial. The ugly buildings are taking shape and grow uglier each day. In the course of some back room corporate reshuffling, they have now bought the pub, and the Flying Pig's future looks very shaky.
I have yet to meet a single Cambridge resident who is happy about this development. I cant help but draw comparisons with Tony Blair's lamentable insistence on going to war in the face of overwhelming popular dismay from the people he was elected to serve. Here in Cambridge today, we the local people are obliged to watch helplessly as our home is desecrated in this way by faceless entrepreneurs who have zero interest in the wishes or opinions of our community.
The greedy bastards win again? Probably, but lets at least make it as difficult, embarrassing and shaming as we can for them. Any ideas or intiatives you may have, please voice them here,

lyrics
long may the Pig continue to fly
long may the Pig continue to fly
one bright morning
a letter came through the flap
inviting us to see your plans
to alter the map
you wanted to know what
we have to say
you’re going to build a space station
and we’re in the way
we say no………
……………………..
this is where we live
and celebrate our days
we say no………..
………………………………
not in our back yard
go build it where you live
we already have
empty offices
right down the street
for all to see
you want to tear down
perfectly good buildings
to build more offices
who are you doing this for?
and the botanical gardens
how about them
have you asked the gardeners
how you’ll affect their crop
you say the war memorial shouldn’t be
in the middle of the street
that’s where they are all over Europe
so we remember…
this is a place
where we all get along
folks of all ages
and all walks of life
warm and friendly
is the only agenda
you can bring your grandma
you can bring your wife
we say no………
(forget about it)……………………..
this is where we live
and celebrate our days
we say no………..
(thanks anyway)………………………………
not in our back yard
go build it where you live
long may the pig continue to fly…..
